FLORENCE, AL – The Willingham, a publication of the 天美传媒 History Graduate Student Association (HGSA), will launch its second edition May 1; the theme of the journal is “Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, and Events,” which showcases the work of several graduate students from around the globe.
“HGSA revitalized this publication in Fall 2023, so that by the Spring of 2024, we had launched a website, digital magazine, and Instagram page in order to promote the scholarship and projects that are coming out of the Masters of History, Masters of Public History, and Masters of Secondary Education programs at UNA,” said Avery Calvert, President of the GSA Executive Board. “The Willingham also offers graduate students in other programs an opportunity to publish their work.”
The Willingham emerged from the North Alabama Historical Review, the previous publication of the HGSA, which had a four-year run, from 2011-2015.
“After the publication ceased to exist, the association also slipped in membership number,” said Calvert. “Our current cohort of members has decided to revive both publications as a way to build a graduate community at UNA and to give us an outlet to build and refine professional relationships and other skills that will serve us as we move on to Ph.D. programs or the workforce.”
Dr. Brian Dempsey is the faculty advisor for the HGSA as well as an Associate Professor in the Department of History.
“We are extremely proud of our graduate students and their hard work in creating The Willingham,” he said. “As a scholarly ecosystem, the site now attracts international scholars who value accessibility and an engaging platform to showcase their work. The new issue builds upon an already stellar foundation.”
